Field trips were always one of the most memorable events of my education and Kaylee reports that this is still true. Her fourth grade classes took a day field trip up to the Julian Mining company which is essentially a fully functioning farm nestled in the mountains which recreates life in the late 1800's. The family who run the farm dress in authentic clothing (without our fancy zippers and snaps) and entertain and educate students. The classes were taught how to identify the difference between fool's gold and real gold and mined for themselves using several different techniques. With a real banjo player they paired up in partners and participated in heel-stomping- toe- tapping square dancing. They tried their hands at writing with real feather quill pens and realized how challenging it can be. Kaylee loves the pioneer era and this field trip was a dream come true for her.
